Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are a critically endangered species found primarily in the forests of East and Central Africa, specifically in the Virunga Mountains spanning Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. These great apes are known for their thick, dark fur, which helps them adapt to the cold, high-altitude climates of their natural habitats. Mountain gorillas live in social groups led by a dominant male, known as a silverback, who protects and guides the group. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, stems, and fruits, and are vital to their ecosystems, contributing to forest regeneration by dispersing seeds.

Despite conservation efforts, mountain gorillas face significant threats, including habitat loss due to agriculture, poaching, and disease. However, initiatives like ecotourism and community-based conservation have played a crucial role in stabilizing their population, which is now estimated to be over 1,000 individuals. These majestic creatures are a symbol of resilience and serve as a reminder of the importance of biodiversity and the need for collective global efforts to preserve endangered species.
